While it's been said that you can't
fool Mother
Nature, it's also been said that you
can't keep
runners from running. While
the previous day's
snowfall prevented us from touring the
usual 5K
course, it didn't keep 30 determined
runners
from completing today's scheduled
races.
The three-mile course was
run on alternate
course #2. Quick- thinking HARRC
president,
Jim Collins, set-up a substitute course
on Industrial
Road and through the scenic
parking lots.
Forty-nine year old Don
Bergan took top honors
in 16:52. Elizabethtown's Chuck
Wells came
in second in 17:34. Consistently
quick John
Painter
rounded out the top three in 18:18.
Harrisburg's Jill
Buchle came in first for the
women in 24:54. Thirty year-old Jen
Stiller
took second in 25:54. 2003
Harrisburg Marathon
Race Director, Mary
Alice McClintock, captured
third in 27:21.
Cumberland and Perry County Domestic Violence
Services provided the post-race carbs and a
wealth of random prizes. Pat
Thompson, completing
all 3 events, was the grand-prize winner of
the
$50 Applebee's gift certificate. Another
big
winner was 2-year old Alex
Buchle who won the
coveted box of Krispy Kreme Donuts.
I would like to thank all of the individuals
who helped
make this series a success: Dave
Lebo, Charles
Laverty, Walt
Greene, Jim Collins, Bryan
and Rob
Botti.
These are the people who are always there
when you need them! A heartfelt thanks to
Deb
Donahue and Carrie
Hawk from Cumberland and
Perry County DVS for their support of this
series.
Thanks to all the runners for their
participation! Through
your generosity and support, we were able to
donate a
total of $280 to Cumberland and Perry County
DVS!
Keep your eyes out for the 5K to benefit
Cumberland
and Perry County DVS to be held fall 2003!
We'll
see you same time next year for the 2004 HARRC
Winter Series!
