                                   HARRC Spring Series 5K #1

Following unanimous confirmation that Punxsutawney Phil had indeed accurately predicted 6 more weeks of winter, today’s competitors headed north along Riverfront Park for Spring Series #1.    While the Finish Line crew took cover, 36 tenacious and generous athletes competed in today’s event.    Undaunted by gusting winds of 25 – 35 MPH, they toured the 5K course with impressive times despite the adverse conditions.

Taking first overall was HARRC’s own Frank Leiter in an amazing 17:50.   Having worked night-shift, a sleep-deprived Tadd Morris took second in a swift 18:15.   On the women’s side,  Duncannon’s Belinda Hetzel blazed in with 22:08, followed by Masters’

Runner Mary Matthews in 22:48.    Belinda came in 6th place overall.  Scott Morgan took first in the Male Masters category  with 20:21.

The Mens’ award winners were seen keeping warm in their new Thermotech pullovers, while the Female winners planned to bask in the warmth of their silver-embossed tealights. All competitors enjoyed coffee generously donated by Cornerstone Coffeehouse and the Panera bagels/muffins.

HARRC graciously sponsors these events to maintain runners’ fitness during the colder months.   However, more importantly, we enjoy the camaraderie for a great cause – Domestic Violence Services of Cumberland & Perry County.   Our thanks and appreciation go to DVS for supporting these events with post-race food and a multitude of random prizes.    WE LOOK FORWARD TO SEEING EVERYONE, SAME TIME, SAME PLACE, ON MARCH 11, 2006!!

Today’s fun facts………… the male 50 – 59 age group was the most fiercely-contested with 8 participants……… all the 20 – 29 year-old male runners in the Greater Harrisburg area must have slept in today as we had no competitors in their age group……we predict that Chris Gipe will be spotted tonight at a local Papa John’s utilizing his gift certificate…….. odds are that the Morgan family will be taking home Quizno’s subs today………. Stacey Pietras ran today’s race as the last leg of her 17-mile marathon training run………..and Murphy Pietras, probably the only participant who actually enjoyed today’s weather, continues his 5K racing streak.
