With a race-time wind chill of eight degrees, 48 tough & tenacious athletes headed north along an ice-capped Susquehanna River for race #3 of the HARRC Winter Series. Times were swift despite the 20 MPH head-wind. Only 6 seconds separated the top three with Mike Leathers taking first in 19:13, followed by Jim Smiley in 19:15, and Tim Waechter coming in third in 19:19. Staten Island’s Kimmy Leathers led the ladies in 21:29 followed by Elaine Grimwood in 24:01. Yvonne Lodovici rounded out the top three with a time of 25:25. Age-group winners in the men's division took home fleece jackets, gloves, and Papa Johns pizza certificates. Winners in the women's division were awarded flowers and candle-holders. DVS provided us with a host of random prizes including gift certificates to local restaurants. The series of races happens because of the support from a lot of great folks – Charles Laverty, Jim & Deb Donahue, Debbie & Steve Whittle, Gary Grobman, & Walt Greene. Thanks also to HARRC for financially sponsoring these events – we’ve been able to host this series for about 12 years (I’ll have to check with Walt on this) and proceeds have gone to Harrisburg Women's Shelter, Bethesda Mission, and Downtown Daily Bread. For the past five years, we’ve been blessed with supporting DVS of Cumberland & Perry Counties. We’ve become good friends with executive director, Deb Donahue, and her runner-husband, Jim (who’s tough to catch in a race). Along with Nancy Chavez, race-director for Randi’s Race, they’ve provided us with post-race refreshments and multiple random prizes. The big draw for this race is the post-race Cornerstone Coffeehouse Coffee and plentiful food, and we thank DVS for providing that for us. Most of all, we also are thankful for all the runners who support this event. Thanks to your generosity, you raised $814 for DVS, which in turn will help provide physical, financial, and emotional support for women and children in need in Cumberland and Perry Counties. And we look forward to seeing you again next year!!!! Today’s fun facts……… race time temp was 23 degrees with a wind-factor decreasing it to 8 degrees……in setting up the course at 5 AM, the race director reported that traffic along Front Street was light and runners were few at that hour…….HARRC Winter Series has never been cancelled due to inclement weather………we suspect that Brad and Donna Colwell will be spotted at Applebee’s sometime in the near future..…..good to see Luke Schrader back on the roads…… we’ll allow John Heycock, who started a bit late, to officially deduct 2 minutes and 30 seconds from his finish time…..and hopefully next year, according to the olde Irish saying, “May the wind always be at your back…..” Results: Results:
