It obviously takes more than high levels of turkey tryptophan to slow down the 50 athletes that toured the hills of Wildwood Park in event #1 of this year’s Winter Series.  Today’s overall winner, Rich Mandeler, barely had time to notice the colorful fall foliage as he sped through the course in a quick 19:24.   Taking second and third, both coming off a recent Harrisburg Marathon ( with 3:33 and 3:14  respectively), were Gary Grobman in 19:39 and Lynn Danner in 19:52. 

Coming in first for the ladies was Christie Yang, from Falls Church, Va., in 21:37  followed closely by Bridget Danner in 22:01.   Masters stand-out, Cindy Blood, captured third in 23:22. 

Our female age-group winners were awarded sterling silver running pendants.   Our male winners took home gift bags and Starbucks gift certificates.   While random prizes were distributed, runners warmed up with coffee donated from the Cornerstone Coffeehouse and a variety of carbohydrate goodies.  Everyone then departed home to check out the turkey leftovers in the fridge and clear their calendars for our next event on 12/22/07.

We thank EVERYONE for their generous donations to DVS of Cumberland and Perry Counties.   We’re off to a great start.   Thanks to DVS for providing today’s coffee and gift certificates.  We look forward to seeing everyone at event #2 on 12/22/07 at  9AM – location: Harrisburg East Shore YMCA (which means heat and indoor restrooms)!!

Today’s fun facts:……third place finisher, Lynn Danner, was awarded the HARRC Male Runner of the Year in 1986…..….a mere 6 days ago, Frank Crupi competed in the Philadelphia Marathon……today’s race-time  temp was 30 degrees……if done properly, we learned that you CAN  safely  string Christmas “ornaments”  on gift-wrap ribbon……good to see Cedar Cliff cross-country runners,  Bryan Smith and Ryan Gill, at today’s event;  Ryan ran a 20:59 at the New Cumberland Turkey Trot on Thursday……. thanks to the multi-city/state Eschenfelder family for coming out today……. .and Cameron Smiley, who is now a year older and wiser (he’s turned 3 since out last event), continues his “streak” of Winter Series fun runs, having competed in our last three events…..
