2007-8 Winter Series

On an unusually “windless” day on Riverfront Park, 52 athletes ran the 5K loop course along the mighty Susquehanna for event #2 in the year’s Winter Series. Twenty year-old Derek Oskutis bested the field with an outstanding 16:50. Running strong in second place was Frank Leiter with 16:59. Close behind in third was Franklin & Marshall student, Charles Bowen, with 17:10. Stephen Heisey, a member of the University of Pittsburgh Crew Team, took fourth in 17:57.

Trinity High School Honor Student (first honors), Megan Earley, captured the women's title with a swift 22:53. Camp Hill’s Joy Bochniak took second with 26:51 followed by Sue Craley with 27:20.

While everyone warmed up with coffee generously donated by the Cornerstone Coffeehouse, awards and random prizes were distributed. Everyone then departed to finish their holiday shopping and crack open their new running diaries to pencil in Race #3 on 1/19/08.

Thanks to all runners for their generosity with donating to Cumberland and Perry County DVS. We’d also like to thank Nancy Chavez for graciously speaking with us today. Nancy is the founder and director of Randi’s Race, which benefits DVS.

Today’s fun facts…. .congratulations to Frank Leiter for “breaking seventeen”…thanks to Paul Moretz for his course monitor double-duty…. ..race time temp was 35 degrees…good to see CD East Boys Varsity Basketball Coach, Charlie Bowen today; the Varsity Panthers are presently 10 – 0 this season..…thanks to Chuck Wells for coming and bringing us race apps. for the Elizabethtown College Frozen Foot Series to be held at Elizabethtown College on 1/20/08, 2/17/08 and 3/16/08; Chuck is the (fast) Race Director for this 5K race series which also helps keep us motivated over the winter… and we learned that Steve Whittle bakes one mean chocolate chip cookie…..
