Silver Spring 10K

On a brisk and windy day 20 intrepid runners embarked on a 'Beatles run', otherwise known as a long and winding road.  For the first 10K (6.2 mile) run of the year the runners ran through the hillside of Silver Spring Township over rolling hills and through several neighborhoods.

Joining us today was Rob Robertson from Missouri who was here visiting and saw the run posted on the website.  Also joining us today was Jennifer Gilbert, originally from Ottawa (Canada) and Tracey Stewart, originally from the United Kingdom.

It was a spirited run with one .4 mile hill that saw the duo of Frank Leiter and Tadd Morris cross the finish line first in 38:55 followed by Mark Barnhardt in 43:05 and newcomer Bob Duffy in 43:29.  Usual contender Mike Garman took it slowly and ran with our guest from Missouri.

Susie Kramer once again led the women in 43:56, barely missing a top five finish.  Marge Lebo in 50:25 and Jennifer Gilbert in 51:43 finished second and third among the women.

The full finishing order:

WEEKLY SUNDAY 1:30 PM CLUB RUN
March 18, 2001

Race Director: Brad Colwell

Riverfront Park 5 (approximately) Miler

The second week of the revived Sunday 1:30 run saw a drop in attendance to 3 runners.  The unmeasured course went up river to Maclay St. then on the lower level to City Island.  We made a trip around the ballparks then went back up river to the sunken gardens and returned to the start at Front and Forster St.

It was guaranteed that someone over 50 would win this run as Tom Bowers, 50, Nick Marshall, 53 and Brad Colwell, 52 were the only participants.  So in the true nature of informal running all three finished in 45:37.

Actually Tom Bower crossed the line first so we will declare him the winner for his first running victory ever.

Note:  The Easter weekend run will be on Saturday April 14 at 1:30.
